Follow along with our Employee Spotlight series to discover the remarkable stories and contributions of our team members at Florida Dermatology Specialists. This month, we’re thrilled to highlight Lucinda Faulkner, our outstanding Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. Originally from Covington, Georgia, Lucinda attended Emory University and later Vanderbilt University School of Nursing. Lucinda joined our team this year and has shown her passion for and dedication to dermatology every day since.
Can you share a bit about your background and how you got into dermatology or practice administration?
My father was a small-town family physician and I always admired his connection to his patients, something not all physicians have. Growing up, I watched my mother having multiple skin cancers diagnosed and treated, likely from growing up in Panama City. I chose to be a nurse practitioner because I wanted to be effective in medicine, but wanted to see my patients as people, not disease processes. I felt that the nurse practitioner role embodies that. I was drawn to dermatology for the variety of patients and conditions, and the chance to make them better. The skin is our largest organ and I find it fascinating that it can sometimes show us evidence of internal problems, involving other organs.
What motivates you to do your best work?
I really enjoy my patients and love to get to know them. I always want to do my best work for these wonderful people who came to me for help.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in dermatology or managing a practice?
While an education from books is an excellent foundation, shadowing a skilled dermatologist and seeing the variations that occur in people is vital to being good. To be good in dermatology, you must enjoy attention to detail and the ability to effectively interact with your patients.
Could you share a skin care tip that you believe everyone should know for healthier skin?
Except in special cases, avoid antibacterial soap as a daily cleanser. And, wearing a daily SPF 30 on face, neck and ears, will help prevent significant, cumulative, day-to-day damage.
What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside of work?
I enjoy adventures with my dog and traveling with friends.
Question from Valeria: What is your favorite part of your job and why?
My favorite part of the job is the people that I meet every day. Our patients are consistently very nice, and interesting. I love getting to know them while performing my job. Going to the dermatologist doesn’t have to be a dreaded chore.
