Squamous Cell Carcinoma Explained

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one of the most common types of skin cancer, which is derived from the squamous cells that make up the middle layers of the skin. Like most other types of skin cancer, squamous cell carcinoma is caused by sun exposure that damages these skin cells. For this reason, it often develops on the face, neck and other areas that are frequently exposed to the sun. It can have several different appearances, such as:

  • Scaly, red skin
  • Rough, thickened skin
  • Raised growth
  • Crusting and bleeding

A minority (roughly 4%)  of squamous cell carcinomas will metastasize, or spread, inside the body.  Recent data has provided some insight as to which tumors are higher risk, and may require imaging studies like ultrasound, CT scans, or MRIs.  Immunosuppressed patients have a much higher risk of developing SCC.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma Treatment

Squamous cell carcinoma often grows relatively slowly, although at times it may grow very quickly, which would mean it’s important to start treatment promptly after receiving a diagnosis. When detected early, SCC can be treated with a number of options, primarily through surgical excision, Mohs surgery, or at times a simple destruction, also known as electrodesiccation and curettage. Mohs surgery is an effective treatment option, depending on the tumor size and location, and one that we often recommend due to its high success rate and its ability to preserve healthy skin tissue in the treatment area. If your squamous cell carcinoma is growing quickly, please call the office for an expedited evaluation and treatment.
