Learn More About Mole Treatment
While moles are generally harmless, some moles should be monitored for cancerous growths and others may be removed for cosmetic reasons. Whatever your reason might be, Florida Dermatology Specialists provides safe and effective treatment.
Causes of Moles
Moles are small growths on the skin that are darker in color than the surrounding skin, usually brown or black. Moles are made up of melanocytes, which are the cells in the skin responsible for skin pigment. Clusters of melanocytes can create moles of various shapes, colors and sizes. In most cases, moles are entirely harmless, and patients might only seek consultation for reassurance or removal for cosmetic reasons. However, moles that change over time, either in shape, size or color, may be indicative of skin cancer, and should be examined promptly.
Mole Treatments
Non-cancerous moles are removed purely for cosmetic reasons, which can be accomplished most often by shave removal or sometimes excision. If a mole is believed to be abnormal or cancerous, the mole will be removed so that a biopsy can be performed. This will enable us to diagnose skin cancer, if it exists, or determine the mole to be benign with the help of a dermatopathologist.
