Precancerous Lesions

Learn More About Precancerous Lesion Treatment

Precancerous lesions should be treated as early as possible to minimize the risk of skin cancer. At Florida Dermatology Specialists, we specialize in skin cancer treatment and prevention, and are proud to offer treatment for precancerous lesions.

Precancerous Lesions Explained

Precancerous lesions are abnormal growths of skin cells that have the potential to transform into cancer cells. Like cancerous cells, they are usually caused by sun exposure, and most often develop on the face, forearms and other areas that are exposed to the sun. The most common types of precancerous lesions in the skin include:

  • Actinic keratosis
  • Actinic cheilitis
  • Leukoplakia

It’s important to note that not all precancerous lesions will develop into skin cancer. However, given that they have an increased likelihood of becoming cancerous and indicate a higher risk of skin cancer, it’s often encouraged that patients have them removed or treated to be safe.

Precancerous Lesions Treatment

The treatment of precancerous lesions will depend on their type, location and severity. Lesions such as actinic keratoses are treated typically with cryotherapy, topical creams, or light-based treatment.
