Melasma Causes
Melasma is a skin condition that causes discoloration in the skin that may appear in patches or splotches. Melasma most often appears on the face, affecting mostly women and people with darker skin more commonly. Melasma is typically caused by hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy or by sun exposure. Women who experience melasma during pregnancy may find that their symptoms fade on their own, but patients with more persistent symptoms may seek treatment to restore an even skin tone.
Melasma Treatments
While it’s possible that melasma will go away on its own, treatment can help eliminate melasma symptoms and prevent them from getting worse. In addition to undergoing treatment, patients should protect the skin from sun exposure by seeking shade and wearing sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 or higher and broad spectrum protection. Treatment can include topical medications, and at times chemical peels or laser treatments that can help even out the skin tone.
