Melanoma Explained
Melanoma is one of the most dangerous types of skin cancer. It is derived from melanocyte cells, which are responsible for producing melanin and creating your skin pigmentation. As such, one of the most common symptoms of melanoma is the growth of a new, darker, larger, or changing mole on the body. Like other types of skin cancer, melanoma is linked to UV radiation, such as from tanning beds or excessive sun exposure. Melanoma is particularly dangerous because it may grow and spread through the body rapidly. As such, it should be treated promptly.
Melanoma Treatments
Treatment of melanoma is dictated by the stage of the tumor, which is often closely related to the thickness of the tumor, called the Breslow depth. Melanoma is largely treated by surgical excision. Most of the time, this can be performed safely and curatively in the office under local anesthetic for early stage melanomas. If the melanoma is more advanced, consultation with a medical oncologist may be warranted and further testing such as sentinel lymph node biopsy may be recommended. Imaging studies may need to be performed, but they are not necessary for most early stage lesions. At times, immunotherapy, radiation, or chemotherapy may be employed during the course of treatment.
