Follow along with our Employee Spotlight series to discover the remarkable stories and contributions of our team members at Florida Dermatology Specialists. This month, we’re thrilled to highlight Ruth Morales.
Can you share a bit about your background and how you got into dermatology?
I knew I wanted to work in the medical field since I was a teenager. I’ve worked in the medical field in hospitals as a CNA since I was 16 years old. I enjoyed helping patients, but I always felt I was missing something more. I wanted to learn more about skincare and the beauty side of it, so I decided to go and study aesthetics at Tricoci University of Chicago, Illinois. During my time there, my instructor was a retired Aesthetician with a medical background. She would encourage me to further my career path in Dermatology. I went for it, and I truly believe I found my passion. I have not once regretted my decision.
What motivates you to do your best work?
I look at every patient as a family member. I see the patients as someone’s mother, father, brother, or sister. I try to treat each patient the way I would hope someone would treat and care for my family. I also want my children to be proud of their mother and see the passion in me.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in dermatology or managing a team?
To shadow in a dermatology practice if possible. Learn the terminology used in dermatology. Study some of the diagnoses, procedures, and treatments. Also, try and learn about different skincare products available over the counter and skincare products sold in the dermatology clinic.
Could you share a skin care tip that you believe everyone should know for healthier skin?
I am a strong believer in applying sunscreen daily, no matter if there is sun, rain, or clouds—just add it to your daily regimen! Always schedule your annual skin check, don’t put it off. Your skin is your protective barrier against germs entering your body.
What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside of work?
I enjoy going to different restaurants with live bands and dancing. I love zumba or exercising in general for my health, going to outdoor festivals with my family, trying new foods, and carnival rides. I also like playing sports and watching the games (mainly football, basketball, and baseball!). I like going to the beach, but always with sun protection.
Question from Allyson: What is your favorite part about being in Dermatology?
I really enjoy helping patients achieve their skin care goals and seeing their reactions when they see the results. I’m a bit new to Mohs but I enjoy learning and watching Dr. Krathen perform the surgeries.
One question you’d like to ask the next employee that is highlighted:
What skin care product do you believe you can not live without and why?
